What You Need For Your First Apartment

What You Need For Your First Apartment

There are many milestones in life. Getting a driver’s license. High school graduation. Earning a degree. And moving into your first apartment!

Furnishing a new place may seem like a daunting task, especially if you’re starting from scratch. When starting out, most of us need to stick to a serious budget. Beginning with the basics is a good idea for staying within a tight budget while giving you time to determine your decorating and design ideas and tastes.

It’s really not so bad if you break the process down and separate them items you want from those things you absolutely need. Don’t rule out shopping for some of the items you need at garage or tag sales. And, of course, you can always find what you need at discount stores. It turns out it’s pretty easy to furnish your new apartment with the basics as you get settled in.

Here’s an easy room-by-room guide to help you determine what you need for your first apartment:

The Kitchen

Because eating is one of the most important things in life, the kitchen is a must when furnishing your first apartment. Eating at home is also easier on your budget and often healthier as well when compared to going out for meals.

Table and chairs: New furniture can be pricey, so check out the market for used items.

Dishes: Chances are you won’t be hosting fancy dinner parties at first, so stick to simple place settings for four.

Silverware: Have enough for four, just like with dishes. Don’t forget about soup and serving spoons though!

Mugs vs. Cups: Well if you love your coffee, why waste time with ‘cups’? Get some nice-sized mugs, which can also double as bowls for soup.

Bakeware: A cookie sheet is a versatile kitchen necessity which can be used for multiple purposes. Of course, it’s great for cookies, but can also be used to heat up dinner rolls, biscuits, and even pizza. A glass baking dish comes in handy for casseroles, too.

Pots and pans: Do you like pasta? You’ll need a large pot for that. A medium-sized saucepan works for warming sauces, vegetables, and soup.

Skillet or fry pan: A flat skillet is great for bacon and eggs and pancakes. If you can find one, an electric style griddle is also great to have.

Microwave: If your kitchen isn’t already equipped with one, a microwave is a must for heating up popcorn and pizza (along with healthier foods, of course).

Bathroom(s)

Stick to the basics. You can always add more decorations later as your budget grows.

  • Toilet paper.
  • Soap and shampoo.
  • Shower curtain (and liner). Don’t forget the rings.
  • Plunger/cleaning brush and cleanser.
  • Hand and bath towels. Two or three bath towels are enough for one week, the usual period in which you’ll be doing laundry.

Bedroom(s)

Since a full bedroom set can set you back financially, it’s fine to stick with the essentials while you’re starting out.

Mattress (with pad, sheets, and comforter): Some people prefer a frame to elevate the mattress, other like the low style box spring on the floor. Either way, having a comfortable mattress is important for good sleep. And don’t forget about the pillows!

Clothing storage: If you own a lot of hanging clothes, you can get by with crates or boxes in the closet (rather than a dresser or chest of drawers) for t-shirts, underwear, socks, etc. Be sure to make use of any shelf space available in the closet.

Living room

A room designed for relaxing and/or entertaining doesn't have to be fancy to be comfortable.

Couch: For upholstered furniture, going with used items may seem risky, but it’s an option. Check with friends and family since they may have an extra. Whatever you decide, be sure to get something you’re comfortable with.

Coffee table: Having a coffee table is a good idea since it can also double as a dining table.

TV and stand: A source of entertaining is a necessity, of course. Or, if you’re connected, you can stay with a tablet and streaming service(s).

Suppress the urge to ‘decorate’ right away: As your budget allows, you can start implementing your creativity and design ideas!

Best wishes, and welcome home!
